“For a fast recovery Use Intelligent Ice ” Mike Smith
Inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2003, Mike Smith is an all-time legend in the horse racing community.
Born to a father who was also a professional horse racer, Smith began his own career at the age of eleven before moving to New York in 1989 and becoming the leading jockey there from 1991-93.
A dominant thoroughbred jockey for over two decades, Mike Smith has over 5,000 career victories that include his 2005 upset Kentucky Derby win on the 50-1 long shot Giacomo. He shares the all time record for most wins, 15, at the prestigious Breeder’s Cup and brought additional merit to his already legendary career when he rode the great Zenyatta to 17 straight wins, most notably her 2009 victory in the Breeder’s Cup.
These extraordinary victories are only a few among his countless wins and triumphs that include numerous international wins, being the regular rider of three horses of the year, having victories in each of the American Classics, winning three triple crown races, being one of the most profitable jockeys in racing history, and ranking 25th all time in horse racing victories.
Having had a long career that has included so many accolades, his winning the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, annually voted on and awarded by fellow jockeys, says the most about the respect Mike Smith receives in the clubhouse and the dominance he shows on the race track.
On April 7, 2012 Mr. Smith got his 5,000th win at the Pertrero Grande Stakes in Santa Anita, California.
